A.  According to the International Colored Stone Association  many gem scholars believe that the birthstone tradition has its origins with the Breastplate of Aaron (from the Old Testament, the Book of Exodus), a ceremonial religious garment set with twelve gemstones which represented the twelve tribes of Israel.
