A.  Jewelers of America reports that you can effectively clean your gold jewelry (which is exclusive of gemstones) at home by using a mild detergent and water combination adding a few drops of ammonia.  Carefully brush the piece with this mixture using an old, soft toothbrush.  Rinse it with warm water and let it dry.
