The Four C’s: The Very Tip of the Iceberg in Clarity, Color, Cut and Carat Weight
Color
Diamonds occur in nature; they are pure carbon. The icy white diamonds are considered the best; however, only a handful or two each year are found with no color. This means that most diamonds have some body color – which may or may not be visible with the naked eye.
Clarity
Almost all diamonds have flaws, such as black specks (inclusions) or opaque white squiggles (feathers); these natural characteristics of the diamond may or may not be visible to the human eye. How they appear to your eye is what is important, and with an expert jeweler and a microscope, the personality of each stone can unfold. Generally speaking, the better the clarity — the higher the value.
Carat Weight
This is the given weight of any diamond or gemstone. This weight is expressed in “carats” and “points”. A carat equals a fifth of a gram and there are 100 points in a carat. For example, a half-carat stone (.50 ct.) is a fifty point stone and weighs 1/10 of a gram.
Cut
This is the most important of the Four C’s and has the most impact on a diamond’s price and value. The cut creates the Brilliance, or the intensity of the light you see reflecting out of the diamond. Cut makes the Fire in a diamond, the refraction of white light by the diamond into a rainbow of dancing colors. Cut also predicts a diamond’s Scintillation or sparkliness. Cut is the reason you need to see diamonds yourself, to look at them under the store lighting and under natural lighting. Comparing an ideal cut diamond to one of lesser perfection is a lesson in itself.
